Trotting
The tradition of trotting races dates back almost 100 years in the Balearics. This sport, which is not practised anywhere else in Spain, is testament to the cultural exchange between the islands and the rest of Europe. Some local politicians have designated it a “national sport” due to its roots in rural life and its exclusivity to the islands. Five hippodromes; one in Ibiza, two in Mallorca and two in Menorca, put on weekly race programmes for a dedicated group of spectators, both locals and visitors. Grab a table, order yourself a drink and place your bets!
The Maó Municipal Hippodrome, on Maó-Sant Luis road, is open on Saturdays from 6:00 pm during high season and on Sundays at 11:30 in winter. It’s a must for any lover of equestrian sports and is very child-friendly.
