Although restricted in
some areas by its size, the wide variety of sporting activities available
on the island is nothing short of astounding.
Obviously being surrounded
by the beautiful, clear, blue sea of the Mediterranean makes water sports
an obvious choice. From cruising with a small inflatable dinghy or a
powerful motorboat, to an idyllic sail on a catamaran or yacht, Menorca
offers anybody with a love of the sea the opportunity to take advantage of
its unspoilt coastline.
Apart from the pleasures
the sea can provide there is a vast array of other sporting activities
available on the island. Cricket, for example was established here in
Menorca in 1985 and was originally played by a small group of ex-pats on a
5 a side football pitch. Any shortfall in the numbers was bolstered by the
tourists staying at the hotel San Luis in S’Algar! The progression since
those early days has been truly remarkable with the purchase of their own
ground in an idyllic setting in Biniparrell in 1992. However, the work in
preparing the ground for play involved the removal of over 1 million
stones and was painstakingly carried out by the original 22 members of the
club. Today, it can now boast the best ground in the Mediterranean with
its own clubhouse, practice nets and automatic irrigation system.
The keen golfer isn’t
overlooked either with the 9-hole course (now being extended to 18) situated in the beautiful
countryside at Son Parc. Horse riding, pony trekking and donkey
safaris are also available at various establishments throughout the
island. With the local people, football, basketball and tennis are the
most popular sports, with facilities in most towns. Beach volleyball is
also popular during the summer months and although it is slightly more
difficult than it looks, it is certainly worth a try.
There
is a large variety of pastimes and activities to choose from in Menorca.
There are tennis, badminton and squash clubs and also a cricket club.
Football is played all over the island - during the summer fiestas the
local team will invite teams from other towns to play and these
never fail to be exciting.
There
is a nine hole golf course, which offers a good days entertainment to
visitors; club and green fees being available to the visitor.
For
those who wish there are opportunities for pony trekking and horse riding.
There is no better way to take in the tranquility of the Menorcan
countryside than on horseback. Many riding schools offer daily excursions.
Trotting races are also held every Saturday and Sunday near both the major
towns on the island.
The
coastal tracks and interior complex of rural roads offer a wonderful
opportunity to enjoy cycling and hiking through the countryside and
getting to know at first hand the natural areas protected by law in
Menorca.
Go-karting
is also a feature on the island, the highest powered karts being more than
fast enough for most people. There are two Go-kart tracks, one on the road
to San Luis and the other one near Ciutadela.
Those who enjoy such sports as clay pigeon shooting
or archery have not been forgotten, there being various venues on the
Island. You can also find more sedate sports such as flat green bowling,
Petanque or Boules.
