Sant LluÍs
Situated in the south eastern corner of the island, the municipality of Sant Lluís encompasses the small town of Sant Lluís itself, the surrounding villages of Pou Nou, Es Consell, S’Uestra, Torret and Binifadet and the coastal developments from S’Algar to Binisafúller.
One has to pass through Sant Lluís town in order to travel between the resorts in the south east and the rest of the island, which has resulted in Sant Lluís town becoming a bustling hub for the south east, with banks, estate agencies, large supermarkets, a petrol station and many other services available.
Sant Lluís town was founded in the mid-18th century during the brief period of French rule and features a distinct, very uniform architectural style. This is particularly evident in the main street, which remains the centre of activity, with the town hall, church, market square and various bars and restaurants all located there. To ease congestion, most through traffic (buses included) by-passes the town centre on the Avenida de sa Pau. Parking in the main street is now restricted to 1 ½ hours maximum from 9:00h to 14:00h and 17:00h to 21:00h. Either set your arrival time on the special clocks (available in the Town Hall) or just write it down on a piece of paper and display it clearly on the dashboard.
THINGS TO SEE & DO
Just north of Sant Lluís on the road to Maó is the Hippodrome, where trotting races take place every weekend.
Next to this, go-karting is available at the Aeroclub, Menorca’s original airport. It is possible to charter small planes here to an aerial tour of the island. The runway is also used during the winter by grand prix teams for speed tests.
The municipal sports centre in Sant Lluís has a gym, basketball court, badminton and fitness rooms.
Various resorts in the area also offer tennis courts, mini-golf, bowls and diving.
For a little taste of England in Menorca, the cricket club at Biniparell organises matches throughout the season and welcomes visitors to watch or take part.
One of several vineyards that have appeared in recent years, Binifadet is probably the largest and offers daily tours and wine tastings, free of charge. Visits Monday to Saturday from 10.00h-14.00h and 16.00h-20.00h.
Cycle tourism is being widely promoted and the island council is creating and signposting a number of routes all over the island. Look out for both the wooden signposts and the signs featuring a yellow bike on a green background.
Experience scubadiving in any of the dive centers of the area.
And of course the fiestas.
