Es Migjorn Gran CrestEs Migjorn Gran

Menorca’s smallest and newest municipal district (formerly under the jurisdiction of Es Mercadal) covers picturesque countryside as well as arguably some of the best virgin beaches the island has to offer. The small, immaculately kept town of Es Migjorn, with its collection of whitewashed houses spilling down the hillside, retains a sense of authentic rural life unchanged for generations.  Indeed, the residents keep ancient tradition alive here: one in particular penned an anthology of Menorcan legends and at weekends villagers take part in all sorts of popular events, the village band is famed throughout the island and many artists have also made their home here.

Things to See and Do
The hilly terrain in this part of the island hides some impressive gorges making it a good area for walking or hiking. An important natural feature is the Cova d’es Coloms, also known as The Cathedral, a huge cave with a vaulted ceiling 24 metres high and 11 metres long. Remains found inside the cave suggest it was used as a place of worship in prehistoric times. If it is not too hot, this can be a pleasant walk: head downhill out of the town, passing the old cemetery. Follow the red arrows down a track through the Binigaus ravine. The walk continues beyond the cave all the way down to the sea, coming out at the undeveloped Binigaus beach.
