A large
resort by Menorcan standards and one of the oldest on the island, Cala’n
Porter is situated on the south coast, in a magnificent setting on the
cliffs above a large deep beach. It is easily accessible by both car and
bus, and offers everything a visitor could want from a holiday resort.
The
resort itself is to be found on the cliff tops on the east side of a long
inlet. The cliffs on the west side are undeveloped and rise steeply above
the deep golden beach. The inlet is headed by a valley filled with
marshland and fed by the stream barranco
de Cala’n Porter, which in its turn feeds a large family of ducks!
The main access down to the beach is by the fairly steep and winding road,
clearly sign posted from the centre of the resort. There are however a
very steep flight of steps going down the side of the cliff, which
although a possibly more direct route, is only to be attempted by the
energetic, and those wishing to work off the calories obtained through an
excess of liquid refreshment the night before!
The
beach itself offers a large expanse of sand and safe bathing. Problems in
previous years with the sewage system, which have at times marred the
beach, have been extensively and expensively corrected, allowing the beach
to return to its former glory. There are both bars and restaurants at
beach level, and sun beds, umbrellas and pedaloes are available for hire -
everything is on hand, presumably so that once you are down on the beach,
you don’t have to trek back up!

The
resort also has something for everyone. Hotels, villas and apartments
provide accommodation for the holidaymaker and resident alike. Shops
abound, selling everything from freshly baked pastries to souvenirs, and
jostle for space with bars and restaurants, catering for every taste, and
many offering magnificent views across the bay. Cars are available to hire
and there is even a bouncy castle. However there is one establishment that
can boast not only magnificent views, but also perhaps the most unusual
setting in the resort - The Coves of Xoroi. A bar by day and a disco by night, it is set in
a complex of natural caves offering stunning views out to sea, and it
certainly provides a venue with a difference in which to boogie the night
away!
